ICJS invites AJN editor to coffee

Following the Raphi Israeli - Mark Durie lecture, the AJN ran a report of the talk. But they selected no content from the talk and chose instead to cover its controversy. They played on the fact the Marcia Pinskier walked out during the proceedings.

You will recall that we (almost everyone of you reading this page came to the talk) criticised the AJN on two counts. Firstly that they didn't send a reporter to a pair of eloquent qualified speakers whose views have a significant support base. Secondly we were disappointed that Mark Durie wasn't mentioned in the AJN report, even though many of you thought that he was a sensational speaker.

When Ralph circulated an email about it, we received advice and comments from many of you saying that it would be a good idea to try and have a tete-a-tete with the new editor and communicate our concerns directly to him in an informal setting.

Accordingly we rang the new editor, Ashley Browne, inviting him for coffee. He said that the earliest he could speak to us was 26 April. Ronit & Ralph will be therefore be meeting him on Thursday. If you can articulate some of your concerns with the AJN in general, feel free to leave a comment or if you prefer, send an email to lion@icjs-online.org

Tell us what you think

I would like you to ask the new AJN Editor if he will continue publishing so many letters from far left wing groups such as AJDS Messrs Brooke, Rothfields Norman and Robin, Stillman, Salbe etc plus other far left wing Jews some times 50% or more of the letters pages which is way out of proportion compared to how many jews have these far left wing views. That would be ok if 50 % or more of the 100,000 Australian Jews had these far left wing views. I would think these type of views would be a small minority, which should reflect the same proportion of letters published. {I wonder how many Arabs and Muslims that criticise Palestinians, Arabs and Muslim violence or their behaviour would have their letters or opinions published in Arab/Muslim newspapers Fat chance! Is the new Editor also from the left and will he push his left wing views also or will he take into consideration what the majority of Jews wish to read {which IS NOT Anti Zionist, anti American, advocating for David Hicks and other Islamic extremists and not obsessed with open door policy for Middle Eastern refugees and asylum seekers. The AJN is a good publication for Jews that have a social life, sporting life and like to keep up with what is happening in the Jewish community. As there is only one Jewish News paper and there would be dozens of newspapers that daily bash Israel and Zionists let those anti zionist Jews read The Age,SMH or any other Fairfax news paper for their daily dose of Israel Bashing keep the AJN fair and balanced and reflect postive views about israel and jews!

As a member of Committee of Russaian Speaking "Shalom" Association I am disappointed by the position of former editor of AJN to the Jews from the Former Soviet Union. He did nothing to integrate about 25,000 Russian Speaking Jews living in Melbourne into Australian Jewish community. It's an opinion of most of our community.

I gave up on the AJN many years ago. I find it offensive most of the time. Therefore, I do not buy it or subscribe to it. I find it irrelevant to my deeply held Jewish values based on Torah and Halacha. I prefer to find out about Jewish news, events and issues in other ways, such as getting emails from ADC Weekly News Digest, ICJS and the Yeshivah Centre and mail-outs from the various Jewish charity organisations here in Melbourne. I get news about Israel on-line from various news sources. I get news about my children’s school from their school. Let them put that in their pipe and smoke it.
