__Constable Dalrymple of the Thought Police?__ I generally like Theodore Dalrymple's writing, but this time he has it wrong (although perhaps he is acting Devil's Advocate but with rather less clarity than usual) I would have thought Jews would know better then to make an argument like this. The great crimes committed by the Nazis in WWII were made possible in the preceding decades by the justifiable fear of Bolshevism, and a widespread public perception that, because of their overrepresentation in Communist ranks, this was something for which the Jews were responsible. Of course they were mistaken. Active supporters of Communist revolution only comprised a small minority of Jews, although a larger number (intellectuals particularly) were passively sympathetic to some degree. Most such passive sympathy originated not from fanatical adherence to revolution, but because Communism was anti-Christian and opposed to the nation state, two areas of perceived grievance for members of the Jewish community. Isn't this a precise match for the petulant but harmless grumbling of the typical Muslim? Indeed, a vanishingly small number of Muslims are actually active terrorists, far fewer, in both percentage and numerical terms, than the small number of Jews who were active Communists. Some Muslims may express some sympathy for the terrorists, but if they don't act upon it, who cares? Is Mr Dalrymple -- a deep conservative thinker -- really implying support for taking action against a community based on what people think? People say a lot things, and think them too. Millions of Leftists (including Jewish Leftists) routinely say appalling things, and express support for murdering swine far worse than Osama Bin Laden, but as long as they don't act upon their weak-minded views no harm has been done. To accept that all Muslims are behind terrorism, logically one would have to accept that earlier generation were right to see all Jews as guilty of the crimes of Communism. Much better to crush terrorists and their active supporters with an iron fist, and regard the idiotic ideas of the law-abiding but unlikeable majority with benign contempt, the same approach we have successfully taken to Leftists all these decades.
