Letter: Coalition is expected to conduct a thorough reform of the ABC

ONE hopes ABC managing director Mark Scott is deluding himself if he feels the ABC's achievements in children's programming, local drama, and the launch of News 24 will save it from the root-and-branch reform that is necessary if the national broadcaster is to fulfil its proper role in society ("No fears of Abbott-led assault on ABC: Scott", 20/5).

These areas are pitifully small parts of its operations, which are dedicated largely to satisfying the tastes and ideological demands of a small but powerful inner urban elite whose politics are far to the Left of mainstream Australia. Moreover, these are areas of broadcasting that could easily be carried out by separate, dedicated entities, properly accountable to government and the community.

A great many people are looking to the next Coalition government to carry out fundamental reforms to the ABC, rightfully believing that they and mainstream Australia are entitled to programming that is truly objective while encompassing the full range of views, values and interests of our society. If this can't be provided, why have the ABC?

Therefore, if the next Coalition government doesn't execute these reforms, it will have failed a fundamental responsibility and deeply disappointed its supporters.

I SEE Mark Scott says he is comfortable representing the ABC's interests with whoever holds power in Canberra. Of course he is. After all, he's had seven years leading the business that delivers the Labor government's radio and television public relations.

Why shouldn't the ABC cop its share of the coming belt-tighening? For starters, the incoming government can claw back the $90 million over three years just allocated in Wayne Swan's budget. Better still, why shouldn't the ABC pay its own way just like any other media business? We'd soon find out how committed its supporters are.
