Timothy Pilgrim decides not to investigate ABC hacking event

THE federal privacy commissioner will not investigate a hacking incident at the ABC's web site which exposed personal details of 50,000 internet users.

Federal Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim said he was pleased with the ABC's handling of the incident and that consumers could lodge a complaint with his office if they were not satisfied with it.

"At this stage, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner will not be investigating. If people are concerned that their information may have been compromised, they should first contact the ABC. If they are not satisfied with the response, they can lodge a complaint with our office," Mr Pilgrim said.

Early today hackers infiltrated the web site associated with the ABC television program Making Australia Happy and stole passwords, usernames, email addresses, locations and postcodes of people who'd commented on the series.
e hacker then posted the data elsewhere on the internet. The lightly encrypted passwords have already been decrypted by technical experts.

There were some indications on social media sites that the attack was in retaliation for some of the ABC's recent editorial decisions.

According to an AAP report the hacker claiming responsibility said he or she was responding to the ABC's decision to interview controversial Dutch anti-Islam politician, Geert Wilders.

Welcome to the modern age of mass production law decided by a "commissioner" (capricious political appointee). Hello green light to political hackivism.

How can the ABC handle this...isn't this a criminal act requiring investigation by people who are officers of the law? I am sorry but it makes absolutely no sense to me.
